KARTING sensation Gabriel Tayao Cabrera became the youngest Filipino to earn a ticket to Formula BMW after accepting an invitation from the lead organizer of the Asia Cup.
The 15-year-old Cabrera, whose stint in Formula BMW was sanctioned by Meritus GP president Peter Thompson, will complete the three remaining legs of the series at Shah Alam race course in Malaysia in September.
“It took a year to get Gabe to test our cars and I’m glad he finally did,” said Thompson.
Cabrera will make his debut in Sepang, Mal-aysia, following in the footsteps of Fil-Swiss Marlon Stockinger, the first Filipino teenager to drive single-seaters in Sepang in 2008.
“I chose to build a solid foundation in karting first and I didn’t want to keep shifting from one motorsport discipline to another or to take shortcuts climbing the ladder,” said Cabrera.
His feat is considered a milestone for Seaoil Philippines, which is backing his campaign in the prestigious competition.
