Romero graces Royal Charity polo

It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity he couldn’t pass up, an experience he will always cherish.

For someone whose passion for the sport is tough to rival, Globalport owner Mikee Romero had the time of his life when he played in the recent Royal Charity Polo Cup at Billingbear Polo Club in Windsor, Britain, recently.

Known for building champion basketball teams as well as for staging topnotch polo tournaments, Romero described the experience in Windsor as “fulfilling.”

Romero was actually the first Filipino polo player to see action in the match that supports two Britain-based charities—Walking with the Wounded for Soldiers and English Schools Association.

“I’m honored to be a part of the noble project,” said Romero, who was also part of the Philippine delegation during the 2012 London Games.

The match featured a clash between the King Power Foxes and King Power Leicester City, where Romero played with Tal Srivadhanaprbaha of Thailand, Prince Mateen Bolkiah of Brunei and world No. 2 polo player Gonzalito Pieres.

Prince Harry of Wales, a staunch supporter of the two charity organizations, led the Kingpower Foxes to a thrilling 8-7 win by scoring two goals.

Romero also got a rare opportunity of playing against world No. 1 polo player Facundo Pieres of Argentina.

“In basketball, it’s like having LeBron James and Stephen Curry as your playing mates,” said Romero. “I’m going to treasure this once-in-a lifetime experience.”

The charity event that was sponsored by King Power of Thailand raised 150,000 pounds (P10.7 million).

The Foxes were also made up of Princess Azemah Bolkiah of Brunei, Top Srivadhanaprbha of Thailand and Pieres.

The match was the kickoff event of the Queen’s Cup—the world’s most prestigious polo tournament. Cedelf P. Tupas
