Letran is poised to secure the support of boxing champ Manny Pacquiao in time for NCAA Season 91.
Fr. Vic Calvo, Letran’s representative to the NCAA mancom, bared that the Intramuros-based school has locked in an agreement with Pacquiao to support the athletics program of the Knights.
“Verbally, we’ve talked to him. We’ll just follow it up formally,” he said.
With the appointment of Aldin Ayo as the head coach for the Knights’ men’s basketball team, rumors swirled whether Pacquiao’s support will indeed follow suit to Letran.
Calvo said that Pacquiao’s help will primarily be centered on the basketball program, but he hopes that the world champ will also lend a hand to the whole sports program of the school.
“Primarily, he’ll take care of basketball. But we have offered the whole athletics program,” he said.
Ushering in a new era in men’s basketball with Ayo at the helm, Calvo said that he is confident with the squad they have this season.
“Lalaban naman yung Letran. Maliit yung lineup, wala lang dominant center, pero it’s the philosophy behind the team. It’s a team game eh,” said Calvo. “Siguro nasa middle tayo. Yung ranking nila sixth or seven ngayon pero marami naman siguro tayong tatalunin.”
(Letran will compete. We have a small lineup, no dominant center, but ut’s the philosophy behind the team. It’s a team game. We might be at the middle. Right now, we’re at six or seven, but I think we’ll beat a lot of teams.) CFC
