SSC, Adamson clobber V-League rivals

MANILA, Philippines–San Sebastian vented its ire on National University with an easy 25-13, 25-18, 25-14 win Sunday to solidify its hold of the lead in the Shakey’s V-League Season 7 second conference at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Stung by a five-set loss to Adamson last Thursday, the Lady Stags threw the full weight of their vaunted attack on the Lady Bulldogs to secure their fifth win in six games.

“We learned our lesson the hard way against Adamson,” said SSC coach Roger Gorayeb. “We were able to apply it in this game.”

Earlier, Adamson leaned on Pau Soriano’s scintillating effort as it picked up a second straight win by dumping St. Benilde, 25-23, 25-11, 25-23.

The Lady Falcons vaulted to second place after jacking up their record to 4-2.

Aided by a spate of St. Benilde errors, the Lady Falcons rallied from 18-23 down in the third set to complete the victory in an hour and 14 minutes. Adamson scored the match’s final two points on errors.

Soriano stepped up in Laborte’s absence, finishing with 22 points on eight blocks, while Angela Benting and Nerissa Bautista contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively.

“We never forgot that we were the better team in terms of talent,” said Adamson coach Dulce Pante. “That gave us the confidence to come back in the third set.”

San Sebastian showed little mercy, nailing 39 points on attacks to wrap up the victory in just 64 minutes.

Unlike in the loss to Adamson when it surrendered a big lead in the second set and allowed the Lady Falcons to rally, San Sebastian proved unrelenting with Thai import Jeng Bualee and Analyn Benito delivering key kills.

“All the teams want to beat us here, so it’s up to us to turn our game up a notch,” said Gorayeb. “Even a block on Bualee can give the other teams hope that they can beat us.”

Bualee paced the Lady Stags with 19 points with Benito and Suzanne Roces pooling 17.
