Don’t be surprised to see Mexican boxing legend Juan Manuel Marquez back in the ring in September.
Marquez has been dealing with a lingering knee injury for more than a year now but his longtime trainer Nacho Beristain sees the 41-year-old counterpuncher possibly competing for a world title fight a couple months from now.
“I could see [him coming back] in September. He looks forward to working in the gym. We have a singular joy whenever he steps in the gym. He works very hard,” Beristain told BoxingScene.com.
“I don’t know the opponent. I think a world title fight, a title in his fifth division, would be something he’d like. Maybe the British fighter [Kell Brook] or one of the other champions.”
Marquez hasn’t fought since outpointing Mike Alvarado in May of last year.
A potential Marquez opponent, Kell Brook, 29, is an undefeated IBF welterweight champion, who’s won all of his 35 fights, 24 of which ended via knockout.
Beristain will back Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) whatever he chooses to do next whether it’s to continue fighting or hang up his gloves. CFC
