MANILA, Philippines — Determined to make a dignified exit, San Miguel pounded twice as hard in overtime and throttled Rain or Shine, 121-117, to conclude the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on a winning note Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Missing on a potential game winner at the buzzer, David Young made amends in extra period by scoring four of his whopping 42 points to carry the Beermen to its first convincing win since the trade two months ago.
Locals Arwind Santos and Danny Ildelfonso also helped pull the rug under the Elastopainters, who needed the win for seeding in the playoffs, with 17 points apiece combining for six points in overtime.
But San Miguel treaded on dangerous ground in fourth quarter as it relinquished its lead for the first time with 7 minutes left and engaged in a nip-and-tuck contest from the on.
The Beermen, reeling drastically from the trade that sent their veterans to Air21, have lost six straight game since and have tied their worst finish in history.
“It’s a relief that we won. I hope we can carry this to the next conference,” said San Miguel head coach Ato Agustin.
