Ateneo, FEU gun for Shakey’s V-League sweeps

AFTER surviving a tough week, Ateneo and Far Eastern University try to sweep their respective groups on the penultimate day of the elimination round of the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Collegiate Conference today at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles, after scraping past the St. Benilde Lady Blazers, go for a perfect 5-0 card in Group B at 5 p.m. against a Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) squad fighting to stay in the quarterfinal hunt.

Also coming off an erratic outing, the Lady Tamaraws hope to stay unbeaten against the dangerous National University in Group A action at 12:45 p.m.

“We still need to improve,” said FEU coach Shaq delos Santos. “We had problems with our service and reception [in our last game].”

Arellano and University of the Philippines, both assured of quarterfinal slots, wrap up their respective elimination stint with a win in the other Group A match at 3 p.m.

Last week, the Lady Eagles rose from two sets down to trip the Lady Blazers, 23-25, 18-25, 25-8, 25-20, 15-10.

“We just have to stay positive,” said Ateneo star Alyssa Valdez, who erupted for 32 points to help avert the huge upset.

But the Lady Eagles will be taking on another motivated squad as the Lady Engineers remain in contention with idle San Sebastian and De La Salle-Dasmariñas for the last quarterfinal slot in Group B.

All three teams hold similar 1-3 slates.

TIP coach Boy Paril said his squad, which will secure at least a playoff with a win, should be able to flash the confidence it showed in its upset of DLSD earlier in the tournament.
