Fil-Am Purdy, aspiring writer, joining PBA rookie draft

FILIPINO-AMERICAN Jawhar Purdy wants to become a sportswriter when his playing days are over in the Philippine Basketball Association.

But for now, the six-foot, two-way guard will first aim to reach his PBA dream in the pro league’s coming Rookie Draft.

“I find sportswriting quite interesting,” said Purdy, a 6-foot-2 who is one of 16 Fil-Ams in the pool. “If I don’t go into coaching once I hit retirement, I’ll begin my writing career with a blog in basketball.”

Purdy, who suited up for NCAA Division 2 California State University, has reporting and writing in his DNA. His father William was a photo journalist for ABC News covering the Marcos era and the People Power Revolution in the 80s.

Purdy’s father met Jawhar’s mother, Fatima Dela Cruz in Manila, where she worked for the United Press International and was the local contact for ABC News.
