Ateneo swooped down on College of St. Benilde, 25-16, 25-18, 25-21, for an unbeaten finish in the preliminaries of the Spikers’ Turf Collegiate Conference Wednesday at San Juan Arena.
Timothy Santo Tomas went up for a running cross court spike and capped the Blue Eagles’ elimination round campaign at 5-0.
Blue Eagles head coach Oliver Almadro said he is confident going to the quarterfinals and he has to rub that off on the rest of the team to show they can win.
“I should be confident so the players are confident,” Almadro said. “You should always have a positive vibe with you.”
Berwin Coming had a critical error down the stretch which gave the Blue Eagles the 24-20 match point.
Francis Basilan could only muster to cut the lead to 24-21 for the Blazers with a down-the-line attack.
“I should start to bear our courage to show everybody in our team.”
Marck Espejo and Ysrael Marasigan led Ateneo with seven points apiece while Rex Intal added six as Almadro fielded in 14 players.
Johnvic De Guzman and Isaah Arda led the 2-3 Blazers with eight points apiece.
