Iglupas routs Capadocia for women’s crown

TOP-SEED Khim Iglupas successfully retained her crown with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Marian Capadocia yesterday in the sixth Olivarez Cup tennis championship at Olivarez Sports Center in Parañaque City.

The 16-year-old was hardly threatened in the match that lasted only 40 minutes as the De La Salle-Zobel stalwart dominated with her big forehand and lightning-quick reflexes that stunned the 19-year-old Capadocia.

On her way to her second straight title, the 5-foot-2 Iglupas didn’t drop a single set, downing Rafaella Villanueva (6-3, 7-5) in the second round, Christine Patrimonio (6-3, 6-1) in the quarterfinals and Maia Balce (6-1, 6-4) in the semifinals.

Iglupas, a stalwart from the Philippine Tennis Academy, helped the country win a silver in the Singapore Southeast Asian Games women’s team event.

“I’m very happy because even though I just prepared for one week, I played very well,” said Iglupas in Filipino.
