World number one Novak Djokovic was unnerved by the smell of marijuana smoke on Saturday as he advanced to the final of the ATP Rogers Cup by defeating France’s Jeremy Chardy.
During his 6-4, 6-4 victory, Djokovic complained to the umpire about the smell of marijuana smoke.
After the match he addressed the issue, which he said had distracted him in a prior match as well.
“Oh my God,” Djokovic said. “You can’t believe how bad it was.
“Whoever it is, he’s pretty high and I hope he doesn’t come back tomorrow. Because it’s a pretty bad smell. I didn’t enjoy it much.”
The Serb said later that the same situation happened to him in a Friday doubles win.
“Yesterday in the doubles match, today again. Somebody’s really enjoying his life around the tennis court” he joked.
“I think it stopped after a while. Whoever it was …. he was probably on the seventh sky somewhere.
“I felt I was playing better as I was inhaling.”
Djokovic advanced in 80 minutes to win his 10th match against Chardy without a loss in the series, taking his 52nd match of the season against just three defeats.
