Gabe Cabrera, Flynn Jackes and Eduardo Coseteng Jr. powered the country’s sweep in the second leg of the 2015 Asian Karting Open Championships at Carmona Racetrack in Cavite Sunday.
Cabrera emerged the Shifter KZ champion, Jackes captured the Formula 125 Open Junior crown and Coseteng Jr. clinched the Asian Mini-ROK plum.
Determination keyed Cabrera’s victory despite finding himself in an unfamiliar No. 3 spot after the qualifying heats. He moved to second in the pre-final and in the final race, quickly grabbed the lead from Vrei-Ar Suba for good to complete the 20-lap race 9.382 seconds ahead of Suba.
Jackes took over the top spot after favorite Jacob Ang got tangled with Tai Zulberti and slipped to third.
Still, Jackes struggled later in the race as Ang mounted a comeback and threatened to regain the lead with two laps to go.
But Jackes kept his composure and spoiled Ang’s birthday wish for a back-to-back triumph.
Coseteng survived a neck-and-neck battle with Jarred Kim, who led most of the way until the former wrested the top spot on the first turn of the last lap.
OTHER WINNERS: Iñigo Anton, Formula Cadet Novice; Jerry Choi, ROK Senior; Gabrielle Garcia, Formula SL Ladies
