Shakey’s V-League FEU, NU book s’final berths

Far Eastern University and National University overwhelmed their opponents Sunday to clinch semifinal playoff berths in the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Collegiate Conference at Filoil Flying V Arena.

The Lady Tamaraws ripped De La Salle-Dasmariñas in every way for a 25-7, 25-11, 25-11 rout, while the Lady Bulldogs also swept St. Benilde, 25-19, 25-21, 25-18.

“I’m happy because our players performed well,” said FEU coach Shaq delos Santos. “It’s a good preparation for our coming games.”

FEU and NU forged a three-way tie for second at 4-1 with University of Santo Tomas, while Arellano, the reigning NCAA titlist, also remains in semifinal contention at 2-3.

All four teams brace for a tight quarterfinal windup as only Ateneo, the solo leader with a 5-0 record, had secured the first semifinal slot.

The Lady Tamaraws hardly needed the services of team star Bernadeth Pons, who played limited minutes against the hapless Lady Patriots.

Heather Anne Guino-o and Toni Rose Basas took charge with 10 points each as the Lady Tamaraws unloaded 36 kills, double the Lady Patriots’ measly output of 18.

The Lady Tamaraws also had a 6-1 advantage in blocks and fired 13 aces.

Dindin Santiago-Manabat delivered an all-around 13-point performance for NU with eight kills, three aces and a couple of blocks

Jaja Santiago finished with the same output even as Myla Pablo added 11 points for the Lady Bulldogs, who pulled ahead midway in every set.

“We played well, but I have to keep pushing them because we still had some elementary errors,” said NU coach Roger Gorayeb.
