MMDA kicks off UNTV Cup bid, stuns Judiciary

METRO Manila Development Authority launched its title bid with a 76-56 trouncing of defending champion Judiciary  in the 4th UNTV Cup at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City last Monday.

Former pro Johnedel Cardel and ex-Far Eastern University player Cyril Santiago led MMDA’s second-half assault as the Blackwolves turned a 27-25 halftime lead into a 46-36 advantage going into the final quarter.

Sans key players from last year’s championship run, the Magis didn’t have an answer to the Blackwolves’ torried shooting.

The bull-strong Santiago barreled his way to 19 points while Cardel, who once starred for De La Salle in the UAAP and played for Alaska and Shell in the PBA, added 15, highlighted by three triples.

By beating the Magis, the Blackwolves installed themselves as the heavy favorites to win the annual tournament for public servants.

UNTV bigwigs, including CEO and president Daniel Razon and vice president for administration Gerry Panghulan, welcomed the participants and several government officials during opening day.

The P2-million top prize will be donated to the champion team’s chosen charity.

Judiciary beat Malacañang via a two-game sweep to rule the third edition last April.

An exhibition match was also held between Team Skywalker and UNTV Selection for the benefit of ailing PBA icon Samboy Lim.
