PWU Patriots stun PMMS Mariners, sweep ISAA elims

Philippine Women’s University shocked three-time defending champion Philippine Merchant Marine School, 72-62, to sweep the eliminations of the 7th Inter-Scholastic Athletic Association basketball championship Thursday at La Consolacion Gym in Manila.

The Patriots pounced on the lethargic Mariners to lead from start to finish before a sizeable crowd.

Dave Tecson mocked all guards thrown at him to escape with 28 points, while high-leaping Mico Bren Pallares finished with 11 points. Jazper Alvez contributed 10 points.

The Patriots, thus, finished the eliminations with an immaculate 5-0 win-loss card, while the Mariners, who got 12 points from Reygie Debulcos, tasted their first defeat in five games.

As a result, the Mariners need to survive the stepladder semifinals starting September 15 to make it to the best-of-three title series.

Last year’s runnerup La Consolacion College-Manila clipped St. Dominic College of Asia, 69-61 and will meet PATTS College of Aeronautics for the right to meet PMMS.

The Blue Royals got explosive performances from the two-man wrecking crew of Thurlough Grealy and Kevin Marks to frustrate the Red Pikes.
Grealy erupted with 28 points, while the daredevil Marks had 17 as LCC-M upped its mark to 2-3.

PATTS finished the eliminations with 3-2 card after dominating Manila Tytana Colleges in the third game, 70-41.
