Manila, Philippines–University of Santo Tomas and National University kept a share of second after posting contrasting victories in the UAAP juniors basketball tournament Tuesday at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Tiger Cubs picked up their fifth win in seven games after holding the Far Eastern U Baby Tams to just a lone bucket in overtime for a 78-73 triumph.
Kevin Ferrer buried 27 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, while Ismael Corre and Neil Ilarde also stepped up in the extra period to finish with a combined 28 markers.
The Bullpups, meanwhile, coasted to a 77-43 victory over the winless University of the Philippines Junior Maroons for a similar 5-2 card.
Paolo Rivero topscored with 12 points, while Ralph Tansingco and Roque Estoce helped the Bullpups get off to a 25-7 start to finish with 10 points each.
Both UST and National U ended their first-round stints tied at second behind back-to-back champion Ateneo Blue Eaglets, who remained unbeaten in six games.
The Blue Eaglets will shoot for a first-round sweep against rival La Salle Zobel Junior Archers in a rematch of last year’s finals at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum.
