Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s swan song may have raked in more than half a million Pay-Per-View buys but compared to his previous bout it was an obvious flop.
According to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, Mayweather’s fight against Andre Berto did around 550,000 PPV buys, a mayfly compared to his fight against Manny Pacquiao which had a record-setting 4.4 million buys.
Berto has a theory behind the big drop and he thinks Mayweather is to blame for it.
“It’s definitely Floyd’s fault, He left a sour taste in everybody’s mouth because of the Pacquiao bomb shell,” Berto told TMZ.
Mayweather won both of his fights against Berto and Pacquiao via unanimous decision but with little fireworks.
Both Berto and Pacquiao joked, in separate occasions, they should’ve worn shoes built for the oval instead of a pair of shoes made for boxers as Mayweather continued to “run” away from the action.
“I knew if he had the chance he would run around and make it boring, but I tried my best to not let that happen and disappoint the people. They deserve excitement,” Berto said.
