PYONGYANG—Philippine Azkals midfielder Stephan Schrock rarely watches basketball, but in the recent Fiba Asia Championship, he made sure he followed the games of Gilas Pilipinas from Germany.

More than supporting his national team, Schrock is captivated by the playing style of Gilas Pilipinas guard Terrence Romeo.

“How’s Terrence,” Schrock asked the Inquirer upon arriving here, referring to the flamboyant guard who emerged as one of the top players for the national team in the Jones Cup and the Fiba Asia Championship where Gilas ended up with a silver medal.

Schrock made his support for Gilas known during Fiba Asia, posting photos on his social media accounts of him expressing support for the squad. He was actually surprised over the attention it drew online.

Much like Romeo who is known for his ballhandling skills and gung-ho drives to the basket, Schrock has earned a reputation as a magician with the ball at his feet, playing with flair and style.

“I saw some games of Gilas and he (Romeo) is quite good,” said Schrock. “I love his style, his flair and he’s quick with so much skill. I’m a big fan.”

Schrock said he plans to catch Romeo in action the next time he’s in Manila.

“I’m a big fan of his so maybe I can watch him play the next time in Manila,” said Schrock, who plays for Greuther Furth in the German second division. Cedelf P. Tupas
