PLDT Home Ultera turned back Philippine Coast Guard in sweeping fashion, 25-10, 25-11, 25-20, to open its campaign in the Shakey’s V-League Reinforced Conference Sunday at San Juan Arena.
Aiza Maizo-Pontillas delivered the final blow — an off the block kill — that sank the Dolphins and put the depleted Ultra Fast Hitters on the win column.
PLDT head coach Roger Gorayeb was pleased with the easy victory considering that his team is still far from being in full form with Pontillas just got back from a three-month absence and vital attackers Alyssa Valdez and Gretchel Soltones still out due to other commitments.
“It’s a good start,” Gorayeb said. “Actually Aiza was hurting and she’s only had three days of volleyball after her three-month break.”
Valdez is with Ateneo in the UAAP beach volleyball while Soltones was given the time to focus on her studies at San Sebastian.
“In Gretchel’s case, her final exams are coming up and I want her to focus on that first.”
Janine Marciano and Lou Ann Latigay carried the scoring burden for PLDT with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Rossan Fajardo led the Dolphins with 10 points.
