Philippine Navy gave a hapless Philippine Coast Guard a 25-20, 25-23, 25-21 drubbing for its first win in the Shakey’s V-League Reinforced Conference Saturday at San Juan Arena.
Lilet Mabbayad gave the Lady Sailors the 1-1 record with a simple off speed shot that landed softly on the Lady Dolphins’ defense.
Not only did Mabbayad score the match-winner, she was also the main gunner for Navy with 18 points.
Navy head coach Zenaida Chavez was proud of her team for the win but she knows the Lady Sailors still have a lot to improve on.
“We have to work on our floor defense,” Chavez said, even though her team had 34 excellent digs. “The Coast Guard’s hits weren’t that strong but we still had difficulty defending against them.”
Hezzymie Acuña gave the Lady Sailors the 24-19 match point but her back-to-back errors allowed Coast Guard to inch within 24-21.
Paulina Soriano added 11 points for a Navy team which had 42 points off spikes.
Rossan Fajardo led the 0-2 Coast Guard with nine points.
