Sidelined for almost a year after sustaining the first major injury of his young career, Star Hotshots center Ian Sangalang is determined to make up for lost time when the 41st PBA rolls off Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.
The 6-foot-7 Sangalang suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear around this time last year and hasn’t played since.
The long wait would’ve ended last Sunday for Sangalang, but the PBA called off its opening-day festivities at Smart Araneta Coliseum due to Typhoon “Lando.” The league moved the game between the Hotshots and the Rain or Shine Painters to Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.
Sangalang, instrumental in his team’s run to a Grand Slam in his rookie year two seasons ago, is itching to get back on the court after months spent on recovery and rehabilitation.
“I just want to prove that I can still contribute,” the 23-year-old said in Filipino.
Star struggled to find players to fill the void left by Sangalang as they failed to defend all of their three titles last year.
The former NCAA MVP with San Sebastian, however, believes the Hotshots can regain their lofty status in the league under new coach Jason Webb.
