HONG KONG—Angelo Que managed a two-ver-par 72 on Thursday and lay eight strokes behind joint leaders Lu Wei-chih of Chinese Taipei and Andrea Pavan of Italy who shot identical 64s after the first round of the $2-million UBS Hong Kong Open.
The two other Filipinos in the tournament fared even worse. Miguel Tabuena carded a 73 while Antonio Lascuña struggled to a 76 and would need a truly low card Friday to make the halfway cut.
Que, a three-time winner on the Asian Tour, shot nines of 35-37 littered with three bogeys and a solitary birdie on the fourth hole.
In all, 74 men beat or matched par at Hong Kong Golf Club’s Fanling course with the 36-year-old Lu safely navigating his way around the 6,710-yard course with two bogeys, eight pars and eight birdies.
Pavan made four birdies on his last six holes to take a share of the lead with Lu.
India’s Jeev Milkha Singh showed his early captaincy form for the EurAsia Cup with a comfortable 65 to share third with England’s Justin Rose and former world top amateur Pan Cheng-tsung of Chinese Taipei. Asian Tour
