Mayweather named WBC ‘Emeritus Champion’

World Boxing Council (WBC) named retired undefeated champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. as its “Emeritus Champion” for the welterweight and junior middleweight divisions after the undefeated American has finally vacated the belts.

Aside from the honorary titles, the brash American was also given the Lifetime Achievement Award, as announced by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman during the sanctioning body’s annual convention in China.

In a report on ESPN Deportes, Sulaiman said, “It’s official. We gave him time to make this official presentation here at the convention. We are proud to do it this way. He is a champion for eternity with the WBC and he knows that his is his family. We are celebrating one of the greatest.”

Sulaiman also said that if Mayweather decides to come out of retirement anew, he can immediately challenge for his vacated titles.

“If he leaves and comes back, it’s secondary. I would not want to speculate,” he said.

Amir Khan and Danny Garcia are the top contenders for the welterweight title, while Jermell Charlo and John Jackson are at the top of the list in the junior middleweight division.
