When Floyd Mayweather Jr. retired, he not only left a void as one of boxing’s greatest characters but also left two championship belts hanging without a champion.

To fill the championship void, the World Boxing Council has decided to hold a tournament for Mayweather’s welterweight and junior middleweight titles, as reported by Boxing Scene.

As per the report, WBC  will hold the tournament for both divisions to determine the respective champions.

Representatives of the top-rated welterweights and middleweights will be contacted to determine the participants.

Mayweather retired from boxing after his decision victory over Andre Berto on September 12 to finish his professional career at 49-0.

As a capper to Mayweather’s 19-year career, the WBC awarded him with the WBC Lifetime Achievement Award at the WBC Convention in China.

Mayweather was also named as the Champion Emeritus for the welterweight and super welterweight divisions.
