Failing to seal the game in regulation, GlobalPort knew better not to waste another golden opportunity to close out Barako Bull.
The Batang Pier led big at one point but needed overtime to beat the Energy, 105-91, Sunday in the 2016 Smart Bro PBA Philippine Cup at Philsports Arena.
“Extra effort lang kami nung overtime kaya kami nanalo ng gantong kalaki. We made extra efforts in overtime that’s why we won this big. Last 26 seconds, we asked our players to still take the shot due to quotient and it’s not a sign of disrespect,” said coach Pido Jarencio in Filipino.
Jarencio admitted his players got complacent in the second and third quarters and that’s when the team lost ab early 15-point lead.
Fortunately for them, key cogs like Terrence Romeo, Stanley Pringle, and Jay Washington stepped up in the extra period.
Romeo had eight of his 21 points in the overtime period, where he scored five straight for a 92-87 lead in the final 2:14.
Pringle was all over the floor with 19 points, 17 rebounds and six assists, while Doug Kramer added 16 markers and nine rebounds.
Jay Washington had five points in the extra frame, including a huge three with 49.2 ticks left that proved to be the dagger, 95-89.
“This is a big win for us, also a preparation for a big game on Friday against Rain or Shine,” said Jarencio.
JC Intal forced overtime with a buzzer-beating turnaround jumper over Keith Jensen, who also muffed two freebies seconds earlier.
Intal led Barako Bull with 17 points and five rebounds while Willy Wilson wound up with 14 markers and seven boards.
