Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia said the agency has installed a point system to determine the ratings of local coaches and the amount of salary they should get from the government.
Garcia explained that coaches will gain points by showing up in seminars, mentoring their athletes in competitions and guiding their wards to medal-winning performances in international meets.
“We’ve been grading the competence of the coaches through point system. As they go along, the points go up,” said Garcia.
According to the PSC chief, the coaches are categorized under Class A, B or C, together with the regional coaches with corresponding rates of compensation.
“But I still feel the big difference between local and foreign coaches in terms of compensation,” said Garcia. “So what we would like to do at PSC is to narrow that gap and make the salaries of local coaches competitive.”
Foreign coaches earn as much as $2,000 a month apart from accommodation. Filipino coaches usually receive less than half what foreign coaches get.
