GLOBAL seeks to end a string of disappointing results for Philippine teams in international play as it squares off with Albirex Niigata in the second leg of the Singapore Cup semifinals Tuesday at Jurong East Stadium in Singapore.
Global aims to overturn a one-goal deficit in the 7:30 p.m. clash and become the first Philippine team to reach the finals of the prestigious event. The finals is set Friday.
But standing in Global’s way is the Japanese-flavored S-League side which hammered out a 1-0 win in the first leg last month.
With the Philippine Azkals dropping their last two matches to bomb out of contention in World Cup qualifying, it will be up to Global to deliver a feel-good story for the sport in the country before the year ends.
The second leg of the match was supposed to be played in early October, but the haze caused by forest fires in Indonesia prompted organizers to postpone the matches. DPMM Brunei and Home United will dispute the other finals berth. Cedelf P. Tupas
