MANILA, Philippines—Rising star Carlo Biado emerged this year’s BSCP national pool grand champion despite yielding the 10-ball title to Allan Cuartero Tuesday at the Star Billiards Center in Grace Village, Quezon City.
Consistency turned out to be the key for Biado, who earlier ruled the 8-ball competition and placed second to world No. 1 Dennis Orcollo in the 9-ball event of the championships.
As overall champion, Biado, playing under the banner of Bugsy Promotions, collected P200,000 apart from the P50,000 he received as 8-ball titlist and P20,000 each for his two runner-up finishes.
For his 10-2 victory over Biado in the 10-ball finals, Cuartero bagged P50,000. In addition, the pool house pro from Kuwait pocketed P100,000 for placing second overall.
Reigning world 8-ball champion Orcollo, also of Bugsy, pocketed P50,000 for placing third overall. He also won P50,000 as 9-ball winner.
A former caddie from Rosario, La Union, Biado topped the Rep. Manny Pacquiao 10-ball event and then reached the semifinals of the 2011 World 10-Ball Championships last May.
Atoning for his 9-3 defeat to Biado in the 8-ball finals, Cuartero zoomed ahead, 5-0, en route to his first major victory in the country.
“I believe that Carlo (Biado) and Allan (Cuartero) have good chances of becoming world champions,” said Perry Mariano, head of Bugsy Promotions.
