San Miguel, Woodrose clobber softball rivals

MIRACLE Balogna and Georgete Fernandez keyed an 11-run explosion in the fourth and fifth innings as fancied San Miguel, Bulacan scuttled Valenzuela, 16-6, yesterday in the 2015 National Inter-Secondary Girls Softball Championships at Sto. Niño Baseball Field in Marikina.

Woodrose School shut out Tuguegarao City, 5-0, in the other game for its third win in four outings.

San Miguel started slow, yielding three runs to Valenzuela right in the first inning.

The Bulakeño girls were down, 2-5, after three innings when Balogna and Fernandez touched off San Miguel’s explosion of hits.

Meanwhile, 10 teams made the roster as the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (Asaphil) and Cebuana Lhuillier kicked off the 2015 Inter-Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Championships in Baguio yesterday.

“This tournament has been a source of outstanding talents for our national teams the past years,” said Asaphil president and Cebuana Lhuillier president-CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier.
Woodrose groped for form early, scoring just one run in four innings. But a Tuguegarao error in the fifth allowed Woodrose to score three runs and another two in the seventh.
Woodrose trailed Manila (4-1) and Sta. Maria, Bulacan (3-0) in Bracket B. Makati paces Bracket A at 5-0 followed by San Mateo (4-0) and Miriam College (3-1).
