The Roman Empire begins anew.

With his back against the wall, Roman Reigns defied the odds and snared the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Sheamus on Raw in Philadelphia on Monday (Tuesday Manila time).

With Reigns’ career on the line should he lose the match, the son of WWE legend Sika of the Wild Samoans countered Sheamus’ second Brogue kick attempt with a spear to finally take home the big one.

FEATURED STORIES

Reigns almost won the title with a Superman punch earlier in the match before World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Chairman Mr. McMahon pulled the referee out of the ring and distracted the official as the League of Nations members Alberto del Rio and Rusev attacked Reigns.

Reigns mounted a fightback, fending off the interference and nailing McMahon with a Superman punch on the ring apron. Sheamus then hit him with a Brogue kick, but Reigns kicked out at the count of two.

It was then when Reigns reversed Sheamus’ second try and hit the champion with a thunderous spear for the three-count.

The two are coming off of their hellacious tables, ladders, and chairs match at TLC a day prior, with Reigns finishing in the losing end.

McMahon, then, returned on Raw and tried to humble Reigns, before setting the main event rematch under the condition that if Reigns loses this time, he will be fired.

With the win, Reigns became a two-time champion, his first lasting for only five minutes and 15 seconds before Sheamus cashed in the Money In The Bank briefcase on him back in Survivor Series. He also continued to rack up success inside the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, where he outlasted 29 other competitors at the Royal Rumble match last January.

It was also the first WWE World Heavyweight Championship title change on Raw since July 25, 2011 when John Cena toppled new titlist Rey Mysterio, before the embattled CM Punk returned with the WWE title on hand.
