Carlos, Raymundo clinch it with final-hole birdie

Pro-bound Jobim Carlos and partner Iñigo Raymundo capped a two-over-par 70 with a birdie on the final hole Tuesday and pipped the Aidric Chan-Ira Alido combine by a stroke for the championship of the fifth NGAP National Doubles golf tournament at the Camp Aguinaldo course.

Carlos set Raymundo up for a three-foot birdie putt with a brilliant approach and the duo then watched Chan-Alido miss a two-footer for par which would have sent the showdown for the Group I title to a playoff.

The winning pair tallied 274 over the 54-hole championship that had them playing best-ball in the first round and then aggregate on Monday.

Chan-Alido tallied a 71 in the alternate-stroke play yesterday with the team of Jama Reyes and Tom King returning a 74 clinch third place, nine strokes off the winning score, in the event presented by the MVP Sports Foundation, the PLDT Group National Golf Tour, Smart and Metro Pacific Investments.

Ryan Monsalve, the reigning Southwoods club champion, and Lanz Uy closed out with a 77 for 286, with Carlo Villaroman and Raymart Tolentino shooting a 72 to finish at 288.

Rupert Zaragosa, the many-time national champion who was looking for a title repeat with new partner Joey Magcalayo, fired a 77 and settled for a tie at 292 with the pair of Eddie Bagtas and Jolo Magcalayo which carded a 79.

Regina de Guzman and Cassy Isagawa matched par for 281 and won Group III by a whopping 12 strokes over Harmie Constantino and Jona Magcalayo who returned a 78.

Daniella Uy and Marvi Monsalve shot a 77 for 297, with Kristine Torralba and Ashia Nocum shooting an 80 for 312.

Jun Bautista and Iñigo Bilbao, meanwhile, posted a commanding seven-shot lead over Adrian Romero and Kevin Saclot in Group II action after shooting a 157 for a 226 aggregate. Musong R. Castillo
