SAN SEBASTIAN stayed on track of an elimination-round sweep in women’s volleyball, while Lyceum kept its semifinal hopes up in men’s football in separate NCAA action yesterday.
Gretchel Soltones sustained her sharp form as San Sebastian overpowered Letran, 25-11, 25-17, 25-15, to stretch its perfect run to seven games at Filoil Flying V Arena.
Soltones, tipped to bag her second straight MVP plum, unloaded all of her 13 points off kills to lead the Lady Stags closer to an outright finals stint.
“It will not be easy but we’ll be aiming for it,” said coach Roger Gorayeb after his Lady Stags moved within two wins of jumping straight to the title round and earning a thrice-to-beat edge—equivalent to a 1-0 advantage in a best-of-five series.
Defending champion Arellano holds the second spot at 6-1, followed by St. Benilde (5-1) and Perpetual Help (4-2).
The Stags also tripped the Knights, 18-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-23, in men’s action for a 3-4 card.
In football, Lyceum fired 12 goals past Emilio Aguinaldo College to stay within striking distance of the fourth spot at Rizal Memorial football field.
Mariano Suba fired half of Lyceum’s total goals as the Pirates whitewashed the Generals and improved to 2-3, just half a game behind their victims (2-2).
The Pirates have a shot at clinching the last Final Four berth if they wind up tied with the Generals due to a better goal difference.
Beejay Gonzales and Christopher Villanueva scored a brace each, while Noli Dollentes and Zynadyne Penaflor also scored for the Pirates. Jasmine W. Payo
