Alcantara, pal upset top seeds

Francis Casey Alcantara and Indonesian partner Christopher Rungkat pulled the rug from under top seeds Ilja Bozoljac of Serbia and Andreas Siljestrom of Sweden, 6-4, 7-6 (12-10, (10-7), to advance to the quarterfinals of the ATP Challenger Philippine Open at Rizal Memorial Tennis Center Wednesday.

The win somehow made up for the loss of another Filipino, Jeson Patrombon, and Taiwanese partner Jimmy Wang who bowed to No. 2 seeds Johan Brunstrom of Sweden and Frederick Nielsen of Denmark, 6-3, 6-1.

In singles play, Swiss Marco Chuidinelli stunned Italian top seed Luca Vanni, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, to make the quarterfinals along with French David Guez, who pulled off a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 shocker over No. 6 pick Thomas Fabbiano also of Italy.

Guez, who ended the campaign of Filipino teenage hotshot Alberto Lim Jr., in the first round, will face Japanese Davis Cupper Go Soeda who outlasted his countryman Hiroki Moriya, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
