Huey, partner makes 3rd round of Australian Open doubles

Filipino Treat Huey and partner Max Mirnyi of Belarus got through to the third round after a 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 triumph over a Brazilian pair late Friday in the Australian Open.

A pillar of the Philippine Davis Cup team, the 30-year-old Huey found a staunch ally in multiple Grand Slam doubles champion Mirnyi to tame the raging pair of Thomas Bellucci and Marcelo Demolier.

They will fight for a place in the quarterfinals when they face India’s Rohan Bopanna and Romania’s Florin Mergen, the 6-3, 6-2 victors over Lucas Dlouhy and Jiri Vesely of Czech Republic.
