University of the Philippines football player Rogie Maglinas passed away Tuesday after a six-month battle with cancer. He was 19.
The crack midfielder from Masbate played two years for UP in the UAAP before he was diagnosed with a rare condition called rhabdomyosarcoma in October.
Tests showed he had tumors on the right side of his neck, under his jaw and close to his eye, nose and brain.
Maglinas fell into a coma on Jan. 26. He played his last game for UP in the Ang Liga final last July, helping the Maroons win the crown.
Maglinas’ plight drew support from the football community with UP coach Anton Gonzales spearheading efforts to raise awareness about his condition.
Known for his speed and skill, Maglinas was a vital cog to State U’s UAAP campaign.
Popoy Clarino, a member of the coaching staff, said Maglinas’ remains lie in state at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Quezon City.
