Madayag easing into new role as Lady Eagles’ scoring option

Ateneo has always been about Alyssa Valdez since she went into legend mode with the Lady Eagles.

Valdez’ two MVPs say it all, but the Lady Eagles now have another player to lean on.

Enter sophomore Maddie Madayag, who has slowly turned into another offensive option for Ateneo.

Madayag has averaged 10.33 points in the first three games of Season 78 and the young Davaoeña said the transition from a reserve player to one of the team’s main guns is unexpectedly smooth.

She gave a childish “opo (yes)” when the thought of becoming one of Ateneo’s stars entered her mind and she’s not hesitate to take the role.

“Sa training din kasi hindi pwedeng laging open lang pati yung mga quick binibigyan,” Madayag said Wednesday.

Not only has she improved on her volleyball skills, the intangibles also followed suit.

“I guess nag improve naman maturiry kasi kailangan talaga ng experience para magkaroon ng confidence sa court,” Madayag said.

Still, she doesn’t forget to talk to her seniors like Valdez and Amy Ahomiro.

“Sila Ate Ly [Valdez] po at si Kiwi [Ahomiro], silang dalawa, at sila Jia [Morado] lahat sila sa team nagtutulungan.”
