TANEO siblings Relan and Rey, Jr. of Perpetual Help and twins Maria Jeiziela and Maria Nieza Viray of San Beda continued their unbeaten run in the 91st NCAA beach volleyball tournament recently at Boardwalk in Subic, Zambales City.
The Virays smashed St. Benilde’s Jannine Navarro and Melanie Torres, 21-11, 21-19, to sweep their way to the finals with a 9-0 (win-loss) record in the women’s division.
San Sebastian’s Grethcel Soltones and Dangie Encarnacion, the back-to-back champions, are currently at No. 2 while Navarro and Torres are No. 3 with 7-1 and 7-2 (win-loss) slates, respectively.
The fourth and last slot is being contested by Perpetual Help, EAC and Arellano U.
In other women’s match, Letran downed JRU, 21-7, 21-18 for its third win in nine games.
The Taneos bounced back from a first defeat to overcome Letran, 14-21, 21-15, 15-12, and notched their eighth straight victory to claim the top seeding and the twice-to-beat advantage in the men’s Final Four.
A win over Emilio Aguinaldo, which was being played at press time, would not only complete a nine-game elimination round sweep but also book the Las Piñas-based school an outright slot in the finals while reducing the Final Four into a stepladder semifinals.
