Adamson’s winning streak hits 70 in UAAP softball

Defending champion Adamson University crushed University of the Philippines, 7-0, in six innings to stretch its remarkable winning run to 70 games Monday in the UAAP Season 78 softball tournament at Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The Lady Falcons again drew big games from reigning MVP Queenie Sababo, Annalie Benjamen and Lorna Adorable to stay unbeaten in eight starts this season and move four wins away from clinching another outright championship berth.

“It’s now 70,'” said a surprised Adamson University coach Ana Santiago. “This winning streak is just a bonus for us. Our ultimate goal is to win the championship.”

The winning run which started five years ago is the current longest in any sport.

Ateneo, meanwhile ended a long 23-game losing skid, beating University of the East, 3-0, while University of Santo Tomas turned back National University, 7-0, in five innings to boost its semifinals bid.

In baseball, defending champion Ateneo bested UST, 6-3, while De La Salle routed UP, 14-5, on Sunday to move within a win of advancing in the Finals.

Adamson dealt a huge blow to NU’s championship aspirations with a 7-6 triumph.

The Blue Eagles and the Green Batters now have identical 5-5 records, while the Bulldogs dropped to 3-3.

Ateneo and La Salle will face off in the best-of-three Finals for the third straight season, if the Eagles beat NU on Thursday.
