Far Eastern University easily handled National University, 25-22, 25-21, 25-21, in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament Sunday at San Juan Arena.
It was Jeanette Villareal who ended the Lady Bulldogs’ misery with a powerful hit from the middle and put the Lady Tamaraws in the third seed with a 4-3 record at the end of the first round.
Lady Tamaraws head coach Shaq Delos Santos was quite impressed with his team who managed to hold off the Lady Bulldogs’ run in the last set.
“Good thing, we’re seeing their improvement. Not totally consistent yet but we saw that they can make adjustments,” Delos Santos said in Filipino.
National University closed the distance in the third set, 21-20, when Jasmine Nabor nailed an off-speed spike but Jerrili Malabanan scored on back-to-back hits for a 23-20 Lady Tamaraws cushion.
Toni Rose Basas’s service went wide to give NU its final point of the match, 23-21, but Jorelle Singh’s final attempt went straight to the net to give FEU the 24-21 match point.
Bernadeth Pons led FEU with 18 points while Basas added 16.
Jaja Santiago and Nabor led NU (3-3) with 12 points apiece, while Singh added 10.
