The Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine Davis Cup team clinched the Asia/Oceania Group 2 tie Friday night behind the overwhelming performance of Treat Huey and Francis Casey Alcantara against their Kuwati foes that gave the host country an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
Huey, the world No. 30 and recent ATP Challenger champion, and Alcantara, recent ATP Challenger finalist, imposed their will against Abdulhamin Mubarak and Abdulrahman Alawadhi, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, for the Philippines.
Th country will move on to the next round in July against either Chinese Taipei or Malaysia. The Taiwanese, who have been thorn in the Filipinos’ side in Group 2, lead their own tie, 2-1.
Jeson Patrombon routed Abdulrahman Alawadhi (6-0, 6-2, 6-1) in the first opening singles before Gonzales pulled a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, 1-6, 6-7 (8-6), 5-5 retired thriller against Kuwait No. 1 Mohammad Al Ghareeb last Friday.
