UNIVERSITY of the Philippines made the semifinals of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament more than a decade ago.
The Lady Maroons try to move closer toward that goal with a victory over National University Wednesday at Filoil Flying V Center.
While putting one over the struggling Lady Bulldogs guarantees the Maroons of at least a playoff slot in the Final Four, UP’s fate is also meshed with the result of the 2 p.m. opening game pitting Far Eastern U and University of Santo Tomas.
A win for the Maroons in the 4 p.m. match, coupled with an FEU triumph will propel UP to an outright semifinal entry, the first for the school since 2003.
UP skipper Kathy Bersola doesn’t want to put pressure on her team and will treat the potential breakthrough as just another game.
“We just want every game to be a testimony of our hard work,” said Bersola.
Desperate after losing five of their last seven games, the Lady Bulldogs are in the same tough situation as the Tigresses (5-6) and should find ways to reverse the trend.
The Tigresses will bow out of the Final Four for good with a defeat today against the Lady Tamaraws and the Lady Bulldogs on Sunday.
