United States Olympic coach Mike Krzyzewski underwent knee replacement surgery on Sunday (Monday, Manila time) in preparation for his mentoring duties for the Rio Games inAugust 5.
Krzyzewski, who’s also at the helm of the Duke Blue Devils of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), said the surgery went well and he plans to start rehabilitation as soon as possible.
The operation, meanwhile, was performed at the Duke University Hospital by resident joint-replacement orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Michael P. Bolognesi.
“The technical aspects of the case went as we had hoped, and Coach Krzyzewski is doing well,” Dr. Bolognesi told ESPN ,”We will try to get him up walking today, as we will let him put as much weight as he tolerates on the implant right away.”
The coach could be released from the hospital within three days, according to Duke University.
The 69-year-old coaching legend has won a Division I men’s record 1,043 games, with 970 of those coming at Duke along with five NCAA titles.
The Blue Devils, however, lost in this year’s NCAA tournament to Oregon in the Sweet 16.
Krzyzewski will also coach the U.S. men’s national team for the final time this summer in the upcoming Olympic tournament in Rio de Janeiro. Khristian Ibarrola, INQUIRER.net
