RUPERT Zaragosa wrested control early and never let up, ripping local bet Rolando Pila, 6 and 5, in the 36-hole finals yesterday of the first MVP Sports Foundation Visayas Regional Match Play championship at Cebu Country Club.
The 19-year-old Zaragosa, the top seed, took a 4-up lead after the first 18 holes before returning in the afternoon in cruise mode to complete his domination of the field.
LK Go took a very different route in the women’s finals before besting Harmie Constantino.
Go, whose family is a member of the exclusive club, came back from 1-down after the first 18 to upset the reigning stroke play champion in front of a big appreciative gallery that cheered its own.
Jolo Magcalayo, Zaragosa’s victim in the Final Four, posted an exciting 19th-hole victory over former club champion Mark Dy to snare third place.
Kristine Torralba was third in the distaff side with a walkover win over Angela Mangana.
The next big amateur event will be the Philippine Junior Stroke Play Open set on April 14 at Sherwood Hills Golf Club in Cavite.
