Huey, Mirnyi make Last 4 in Barcelona
TREAT Huey and Max Mirnyi hacked out an upset win over fourth seeds Rohan Bopanna of India and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands on Thursday to advance to the men’s doubles semifinals of the Barcelona Open.
Displaying the form that boosted them to quarterfinals of the Australian Open this year and to the title in Acapulco recently, Huey and his big-serving Belarusian partner pounded out a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 shocker over multiple Grand Slam winner Bopanna and Rojer.
But the duo will have a much-tougher match in the last four as they take on American second seeds Bob and Mike Bryan, the most successful doubles partnership in the sport with 16 Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal, who bundled out Lukzasz Kubot and Marcin Matkowski of Poland, 6-3, 6-3.
World No. 25 Huey needs to make it to the top 10 by June 10 to gain a ticket to the Rio de Janeiro Olympic.
