Zapanta’s late surge nets triathlon gold
BENJIE Zapanta overtook his closest rival down the stretch to bag the gold in the age-group select competition of the NTT-ASTC Subic Bay International Triathlon 2016 recently at Subic Bay Freeport.
A member of Team One Triathlon, Zapanta managed to get past early pacesetter Neil Adrian Aynera in the final stretch of the run leg to rule in two hours, 15 minutes and 47 seconds.
Aynera faded to third with a 2:17:51.76 clocking as he lost the silver by just a fraction of a second to Jethro Karl Ramos’ time of 2:17:51.49 in the 1.5K swim-40K bike-10K run elite contest.
Article continues after this advertisementOther winners in the standard distance age-group categories were Mervin Santiago and Kyla Mabius (18-24); Robinson Esteves and Un Ian Ng (25-29); Ronald Molit and Jaylene Balatibat (30-34); Edison Morales and Mary Grace Olfindo (35-39); Daniel Brown and Lexette Albarote (40-44); Jose Leal and Isabelle Marafko (45-49); Sandra Reid (female 50-over); Frank Lacson (50-54); Eduardo Francisco (55-59); and Kilhak Lee Kunimoto (60-over).
