Ceres-La Salle opens title defense vs Loyola tonight

FRESH off a historic international feat, Ceres-La Salle faces an early test as it starts the defense of its United Football League (UFL) league crown against powerhouse Loyola Meralco tonight at Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Having made history Tuesday by becoming the first Philippine side to reach the knockout stage of the AFC Cup in Malaysia, Ceres sets out as the favorite in the 7:45 p.m. clash with the Sparks.

Loyola fell short in the league last year, ending up third behind Ceres and Global.

The Bacolod side, which signed Stephan Schrock before the start of the season, is seeking a strong start after losing to Global in the UFL Cup finals two weeks ago.

Kaya takes on last year’s second division champion Laos at 5:15 p.m., after the first match between Pasargad and JP Voltes at 2:15.
Like Loyola, Kaya is also out to end a string of disappointing results in the league where the champion earns an automatic berth to the 2017 AFC Cup.

The Sparks, who lost to Ceres, 1-2, in the UFL Cup opener last February, boast of firepower up front with Alvaro Castiella and Tahj Minniecon. Phil Younghusband is still recovering from injury.
