Playing for a star-studded team, Cyd Demecillo has managed to stand out as a member of De La Salle University.

With teammates like Mika Reyes, Ara Galang, and Kim Fajardo, it would be a struggle for the bubbly Cebuana to make a name for herself.

Demecillo did shine, but it would come through moments of anxiety, and physical pain.

Back in March, Demecillo injured her knee in La Salle’s win over University of the Philippines, 18-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-21, that forced her to miss several weeks.

“Personally, para sa akin, natakot ako na baka di ako ma-lineup kasi may stress fracture ako,” Demecillo said Saturday at Smart Araneta Coliseum. “So ayun, pumasok sa isip ko ‘maglalaro pa ba ako o hindi?’”

“Nag decide ako na tapusin ang season na ito.”

Demecillo finished her season and eventually earned three titles with La Salle, the last one came on Saturday when they beat arch rivals Ateneo 19-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-16, in the final game of the season.

She added quitting in her final season could very well end up as a decision she would regret over and over again.

“It’s now or never, di ko na mababalikan ito, ayokong may regrets ako sa future,” Demecillo said smiling. “Minotivate ko sarili ko na kaya ko pa ito, kasi sa sarili mo ikaw lang makakasagot sa mga tanong mo. Kaya ko pa ba ito? Survive lang.”

As her playing career with La Salle ends, which also included two medals in the beach volleyball tournament, Demecillo can now solely focus on her Master’s degree in Mass Media.

Playing in a commercial league is also an option, and of course vacation.

When asked if he would practice journalism once she leaves La Salle, Demecillo gave an enthusiastic reply.

“We’ll see, we’ll see.”
