THIS should serve as a stern warning to all delinquent national sports associations.
Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia said yesterday the negligent associations would have to settle their financial obligations with the government or face a legal case before the Office of the Ombudsman.
“Before we leave, we will be filing legal cases against all NSAs that have not liquidated their financial assistance yet,” said Garcia.
“It’s government funding, so the cases can be filed before the Ombudsman,” he pointed out.
Garcia said a total of P25 million has yet to be settled by 66 NSAs on their list, with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines having the biggest amount at P2.6 million.
Other NSAs remiss in their duty to justify their expenses and provide receipts that ran at least in a million were judo (P1.6 million), football (P1.9M) and rugby (P1.7M).
Also included in the list are American tackle football, underwater hockey and Philspada, the NSA for differently-abled athletes.
Garcia said Olympic sports boxing, athletics and swimming do not have any outstanding financial obligations to settle.
Garcia said they were able to reduce the unliquidated funds from over a P100 million since the start of their term in 2011 down to P25 million.
