Mayweather: I will only return to fight McGregor
Make no mistake: Floyd Mayweather Jr. wants Conor McGregor and no one else.
The undefeated boxing world champ has made it clear that the dream match between him and the UFC featherweight champion will be the only fight which would make him re-consider coming out of his retirement anew.
In an interview with ESNews, Mayweather said that his camp is truly considering making the bout happen.
“If I do fight, it’s only against Conor McGregor, not against nobody else,” said Mayweather.
He reiterated that the thought of a boxer fighting an MMA fighter, which also happens to be one of the biggest draws in the UFC today, intrigued him.
“(It’s) because this matchup is so intriguing. You have (a boxer) against an MMA fighter – one of the best MMA fighters to ever stand up and do it. He’s a strong fighter and when I look at his fights, he’s a little faster than I thought he was,” he said.
But before this fight comes to fruition, there are factors to iron out including Mayweather’s demand of a nine-digit payday for his return.
Mayweather’s camp, though, is already exploring possible dates and venues for the fight.
“I’m pretty sure we’re going to have a master plan to make that fight happen,” said Mayweather. “It hasn’t happened, yet, but we locked down some dates, me and my team, me and Al Haymon, me and Leonard Ellerbe. We locked down some dates, in different countries, in different cities in the United States.”
