Still finding its new leaders, a balanced Far Eastern University dealt Perpetual Help its first loss in the 2016 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup with a 62-57 decision at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Brandrey Bienes had 10 points off the bench in the Tamaraws’ all-out attack.
Steve Holmqvist and Wendell Comboy also added eight points apiece in FEU’s second win in five games.
“I’m happy not because of the win, but because I see improvements. It’s something that we always preach to them, so every day is a chance to improve,” said coach Nash Racela.
FEU held a 60-51 lead in the final 2:15 before a late surge from the Altas trimmed the lead to just three, 60-57, in the last 13.1 seconds thanks to a three pointer from Gab Dagangon and a fastbreak layup from AJ Coronel.
But Perpetual refused to give a foul in the ensuing possession, allowing the Tamaraws to run the clock down with Holmqvist canning two freebies in the end.
Coronel carried Perpetual (4-1) with 13 points and four rebounds, while Dagangon had 12 markers and six boards in the defeat.
